Stingray City - The World's Best 12ft dive

 

POST COVID UPDATE: Since visiting Stingray City Dive Site post COVID (2022 when Cayman started to finally reopen). There has been significantly less stingrays than before. If we are lucky maybe we'll get 1 or 2 stingrays or 1 which is not interested in the food or divers and then swims away or no stingrays at all. Which it is the open ocean, and we can't promise anything because we don't leash these wild animals.

You might be asking: Why? Go out there and feed them? Where did they go? What happened? Well, those are all very good questions! Department Of Environment (DOE) and volunteers feed the stingrays during lockdown to ensure we could keep the magic of stingray city and ensure they are taken care of. While these stingrays were fed at Stingray City sandbar, not Stingray City Dive Site.

At this moment in time, Stingray City Dive Site is upon request. Like any dive, we only promise 2 things: water and your dive buddy.

Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars found in the North Sound of Grand Cayman. Here, southern stingrays are found in abundance. The stingrays began gathering in the area decades ago when fisherman returned from a trip to clean their fish in the calm water of the North Sound. As the fishermen threw the fish guts and squid overboard, the stingrays would gather to enjoy a free meal.  Soon, the stingrays associated the sound of a boat engine with food. As this practice turned into a tradition, divers realized that the stingrays could be fed by hand.
